A Note on Continuing Education for Professional Engineers
The Indiana Code requiring professional engineers to maintain a minimum amount of continuing education credits over time is now in effect. Below is a letter written by Elizabeth Keifner Crawford, the director of the Indiana State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers on the subject:
Dear Licensees:
The rules regarding continuing education for Professional Engineers licensed in Indiana are now in effect. It is your responsibility as a licensed Professional Engineer to maintain all of your certificates and to insure that the courses you claim for continuing education are proper. As of August 18th, 2010, Professional Engineers are required to earn 30 continuing education hours (this is the same term as PDH) every two years. It is mandatory that Professional Engineers take one (1) hour of ethics and one (1) hour of Indiana Statutes and Rules each biennium.
The first biennium for continuing education for Professional Engineers runs from August 1, 2010 to July 31, 2012. The first continuing education audit for professional engineers will take place after the 2012 renewal cycle. Indiana does not allow continuing education for patents. Teaching and instruction credits are allowed but are limited to the first time teaching or giving a presentation. It is imperative that you read the continuing education rules now so that you are prepared when the 2012 renewal cycle hits. The rules for continuing education are available on the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers’ website located at: http://www.in.gov/pla/engineer.htm.
The board is currently accepting applications from providers to have their continuing education courses approved by the board. Providers that meet the definition of an “approved organization” under Indiana Code § 25-1-4-0.2 do not need to submit applications. Providers that do not meet the definition of an “approved organization” may also submit courses to an approved organization under Indiana Code § 25-1-4-0.2 for approval. Courses which have been approved by the Board for providers that do not meet the definition under Indiana Code § 25-1-4-0.2 are listed in a spreadsheet on the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers’ website. The list will be updated once a month.
Online courses on Indiana Statutes and Rules for Engineers are offered by:
• The Indiana Chapter of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) (www.acecindiana.org/continuingeducation)
• The Indiana Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) (http://www.indspe.org/con_ed.html)
